Elder Abuse and Neglect Continues to Plague Our Nation’s Seniors

imgresA recent report created by Families for Better Care revealed the disturbing fact that cases of elder abuse and neglect in nursing home facilities continue to increase. Out of all the nursing homes graded on their quality of care, nearly 90 percent cited a deficiency. More than 50 percent of nursing home staff admitted to mistreating older patients either physically or verbally. During interviews with 2,000 residents, 44 percent reported they had been abused, and 95 percent said they had been neglected.

How Nursing Homes are Falling Short

According to a report from U.S. Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, deficiencies in American nursing homes range from minor infractions to major violations. Such violations include:

• Hiring workers with violent criminal backgrounds (including manslaughter)
• Inadequate medication management
• Physical abuse of patients
• Sexual assault of patients
• Failing to protect residents from fellow patients with aggressive behavior

Nearly 1 in 3 nursing homes have been cited for violations of federal standards that had the potential to cause harm – or had in fact caused actual harm – to older residents. 1 in 10 facilities had violations that placed residents in jeopardy of death.

Why so many problems in our country’s nursing homes? According to the American Association for Justice, 90 percent of U.S. nursing homes have staffing levels too low to provide adequate care - despite $75 billion in state and federal nursing home funding. In addition, the workers that are present may be poorly trained and inexperienced. Without point-of-care transparency provided by a home care system like ClearCare Online, supervision and accountability is minimal.
