A new global study released by the United Nations and elder advocacy groups, the world is aging so fast that many countries are not prepared for a rapidly swelling senior population. In the report, 91 countries are ranked on the economic well-being of senior citizens, with Sweden ranking #1 and Afghanistan rounding out the bottom of the list.
By the year 2050, individuals aged 60 and older are expected to outnumber youth under 15 – for the first time in recorded history. Unfortunately, many countries have chosen, or have not been politically stable enough to provide a safety net for senior citizens, leaving many to be forced to work or live in poverty during their golden years without proper access to medical care, food and housing.
Aging around the world comes with challenges. Abdul Wassay is a 75-year old Afghani man who spent his younger years as a blacksmith. He now makes $6 per day selling toothbrushes and toothpaste on a busy street – barely enough to provide for his wife. Meanwhile, in Sweden, seniors praise the healthcare system but still struggle with transportation.

While America has foundations in place for senior care like Medicare, Medicaid, Social Security and other social services programs, individual care is still an important need. One option for care to help seniors maintain economic independence is in-home care managed by a home care software or home care system.
In-home care, aimed to help seniors age in place, is an increasingly popular option for seniors – and often less costly than care at a residential facility or nursing home. With a home care software or home care system, like ClearCare Online, private duty agencies have the technological power to manage everything from caregivers to client billing.
With schedules integrated in the home care software and caregiver shift reminders sent via the home care system, agencies are capable of managing a growing number of clients & caregivers to accommodate a growing number of seniors.
While an aging population is, and will continue to be, an issue for the world to address over the coming century, with a commitment to our elderly population and the help of technology like ClearCare Online’s home care system and home care software the problem can be well managed.
