Alzheimer’s Training Offered for Family Caregivers

In conjunction with Alzheimer’s Awareness Month and National Family Caregiver’s Month, Michigan Home Instead Senior Care franchise offices will be hosting free, in-person Alzheimer’s training sessions throughout the month of November. The recently launched Alzheimer’s CARE: Changing Aging Through Research and Education program addresses current and future needs by providing family members with a new approach to Alzheimer’s care.

Approximately 80 percent of Alzheimer’s home care is provided by family members. “As the Baby Boomer population continues to age,” explains Jeff Huber, president of Home Instead Inc., “it is essential for current and future caregivers to be educated and prepared on how to manage behaviors associated with Alzheimer’s disease.” In an effort to reach a wider audience and educate more family caregivers, Home Instead developed the Alzheimer’s CARE training program.

A “Fresh Approach” to Alzheimer’s Care

Rather than focusing on the symptoms of or treatments for Alzheimer’s, the new CARE training program implemented by Home Instead focuses on the care and dignity of the patient. This fresh approach encourages mental engagement to help relatives remain safe in their homes and in familiar surroundings as long as possible. The program teaches families how to immerse themselves in the mindsets of their loved ones in order to better manage difficult behaviors.

As most Alzheimer’s care is done at home, working with a reputable homecare agency that offers trustworthy homecare software is highly recommended. Using a dependable homecare system, such as provided by ClearCare, helps family members in a variety of ways – especially when it comes to caring for Alzheimer’s patients.

Benefits of Homecare Software

ClearCare’s homecare system has been developed to make managing and monitoring patient care more efficient and effective. Using such sophisticated homecare software benefits families and their loved ones by providing:

• Enhanced communications between entire care team, eliminating ambiguity surrounding patient care
• Reliable scheduling for part-time or full-time assistance
• 24/7 visibility to loved one’s point-of-care

Caring for Alzheimer’s patients requires special skills. Families working with an agency that uses ClearCare’s homecare system have the assurance that each caregiver will have the proper training and experience needed. ClearCare’s homecare system matches clients with appropriate caregivers based on their background, skills and certifications. In addition, ClearCare’s homecare software mandates each caregiver clock into her shift using the client’s home telephone, which alerts family members that the caregiver has arrived as scheduled.

According to experts on aging, the CARE approach Home Instead’s training program is promoting will be advantageous for both caregivers and patients with Alzheimer’s. Encouraging caregivers to relate to Alzheimer’s sufferers on a more personal level alleviates stress and aggravation, and affords the patient more dignity and respect. ClearCare’s homecare system and homecare software have been designed to help in this capacity – both for professional and family caregivers.
