Stanford Longevity Study

Researchers from the Stanford Center on Longevity and Stanford’s Psychology Department released results from a partnership with ClearCare and Comfort Keepers, a senior home care network. Very few studies have been done to look at the "sandwich generation," which are those individuals that are caring not only for their children, but for aging relatives. Our study looked at the challenges of being a caregiver to those family members who are very ill and the high level of emotional stress and negative social life impact that come with this task.

Social Isolation Study

ClearCare recognized the growing problem of seniors and the effects of being isolated. We recently conducted a study to determine whether social isolation can be managed by technology-facilitated conversations between seniors living alone at home.

A group of clients were selected by caretakers, based on the caretaker’s knowledge of a client’s need for increased social interaction. The 8-week project consisted of weekly virtual conference calls with groups of seniors interacting from personal devices from home, as a remote moderator facilitated topics and managed conversation. The majority of participants found virtual conversations rewarding as the weekly calls were an opportunity to share stories from their lives and connect with other older adults in the community.

The results of the project contributed to a ClearCare patent filing called "Conversation Facilitation System for Mitigating Loneliness."

Machine Learning in Home Care

ClearCare is using the latest in Machine Learning to understand and improve caregiver retention. Working with data scientist Jonathan Hull, we ran a study of over 60,000 caregivers to identify whether technology can help agencies more quickly address caregiver dissatisfaction, which is a good first step to reduce employee churn.

As caregiver utilization rates dropped, agencies were sent alerts. This allowed them to respond with more hours for those caregivers, in the hopes of preventing caregiver loss.

Our study showed that our algorithm and technology were able to identify more caregivers who are at risk for attrition than randomly generated alerts.
